Octagonal painted capital

Description : This capital comes from a demolition layer that is connected with the sack of the abbey in 1567 by the Hugenots. Its sculpted lobed leaf decoration retains traces of the original paint. After examination of the paint layers by a conservation expert and laboratory analysis of pigments, the original polychrome could be reconstituted. Green, long-stemmed leaves alternating with large gilded leaves stand out against crockets, the inner surfaces of which are vermilion-colored, while the outsides are blue (tinted with lapis lazuli).
